8 in 10 Canadians want politicians “open minded” to significant healthcare reforms, 55% support adding private-sector delivery of healthcare procedures to the universal system
In a new poll, Canadians said they want leaders to be open to looking at significant healthcare reforms and 55% say they are supportive of adding some private-sector element to the universal system.
The poll looked at the impressions Canadians have of Canada’s healthcare system and was conducted from February 25 to February 27, 2022.
75% of Canadians believe that “the pandemic exposed significant weaknesses in Canada’s health system” and that it made them question “whether it is truly one of the ‘best systems in the world’”.
When it comes to the detailed breakdown, respondents in Quebec (82%) are most in agreement with the sentiment that “the pandemic exposed significant weaknesses in Canada’s health system” and that it made them question “whether it is truly one of the ‘best systems in the world’”.
Other provinces felt similarly to respondents in Quebec; Atlantic (74%), Ontario (75%), MB/SK (73%), Alberta (72%), B.C. (66%).
Additionally, 76% of all respondents believe “that the challenges Canada’s health system faced during the pandemic are evidence meaningful reforms are needed to improve the delivery and 16 accessibility of health services” in Canada.
Again, the group that agreed overwhelmingly with the statement that reforms are needed, were the respondents in Quebec (90%). Only 4% of those Quebec respondents responded “No”.
In light of the responses, the polling suggests that Canadians ARE NOT confident that politicians will make reforms to the healthcare system to deal with future challenges that the system may encounter.
When asked, “How confident are you that once the pandemic is over, Canada’s political leaders will seriously look at how Canada’s health system performed during the pandemic and make the necessary reforms to ensure that it is able to meet future challenges?”, 59% said they were not confident.
Along those lines, Canadians also strongly agree that politicians in the country need “to be more open minded when considering significant reforms to our health system, including looking at innovative approaches to the delivery of care in other countries.”
Across all provinces, there was a significant consensus that politicians need “to be more open minded when considering significant reforms to our health system, including looking at innovative approaches to the delivery of care in other countries.”; Atlantic (73%), Quebec (81%), Ontario (78%), MB/SK (77%), Alberta (74%), and B.C. (77%).
A whopping 55% of Canadians say they would be supportive of “more private sector delivery of healthcare procedures, including surgeries, so long as the principal of universal access and coverage is maintained”.
People in Quebec were the most supportive of “more private sector delivery of healthcare procedures, including surgeries,” with 67% of Quebec respondents in support.
A significant trend emerged from the respondents in Quebec. Time and time again, the polling found that the respondents from Quebec were the most in support of healthcare reforms and the introduction of private-sector delivery of healthcare services in combination with the current universal healthcare system.
For instance, when asked how they felt how the Canadian healthcare system performed during the pandemic, 49% of Quebec respondents said “poorly”.
Additionally, the majority (40%) of the Quebec respondents said they believe their province performed worse than the rest of Canada.
Quebec respondents were also the most in favor of the inclusion of private-sector delivery of care in the universal system at 67% support for the measure and most overwhelmingly believed healthcare reforms are needed “ to improve the delivery and accessibility of health services”.
Canada has a HUGE problem. The government is corrupt. The "representatives" are representing their own personal interests. Same as the U.S. The few true patriots in either government are dwarfed by the feckless, self-serving, self-indulged, selfish tribe that makes life for Canadians and Americans absolutely pathetic. They are good at two things: Making sure you pay for your own imprisonment and hoodwinking you into repeatedly re-electing them to ensure nothing changes except the continual eroding of the quality of your life.
